Product Details
The bernette 42 FUNLOCK gives you a dedicated coverstitch machine for clean hems, cuffs, and edges on knit and stretch fabrics. You can use its wide or narrow coverstitches, chain stitch, and differential feed. These features help you create durable, polished finishes at home.
Its compact design includes a 87 mm work area, bright LED light, and speeds up to 1,300 stitches per minute. Color-coded thread guides and a looper threading system also help make setup less difficult.
Threading, Setup, and Everyday Use
Put thread cones on spool holders with nets/caps if needed. Raise presser foot before threading. Follow colour-coded paths through guides/tension to keep needle and looper threads separate.
Thread the lower looper in the exact order shown on the machine’s threading diagram. Use the looper threading mechanism and tweezers for small guides near the looper area.
Check that every thread sits fully in its guide before you sew. Turn the handwheel toward you to confirm the looper moves freely, then pull all thread tails under the presser foot and toward the back.
Use ELx705 needles, which are made for coverstitch machines. Turn the machine off before changing a needle, and raise the needles to their highest position with the handwheel.
Loosen the correct needle-clamp screw with the small screwdriver. Remove the old needle, then insert the new one with its flat side facing the back and push it upward as far as it will go.
Tighten the screw firmly, but do not force it. A needle that does not fully seat can cause skipped stitches, uneven stitching, or contact with the looper.
Use the included needle threader to guide thread through each needle eye. After threading, place the thread tails under the presser foot. Test the stitch on a fabric scrap before sewing your project.
The differential feed changes how the front and rear feed dogs move the fabric. It helps you control common problems with knit, stretch, and lightweight fabrics.
Set the differential feed near the normal setting for stable woven fabric. If a knit edge stretches or becomes wavy, increase the setting so the machine feeds more fabric from the front.
If the fabric gathers or puckers, lower the setting. Test a short sample first, especially when sewing jersey, rib knit, or thin stretch fabric.
Use the foot control to start slowly at curves, seams, and bulky areas. Keep the fabric flat and guide it gently; do not pull it from the front or back. The machine can sew up to 1,300 stitches per minute, but slower control often gives cleaner hems.
Core Features and Stitching Capabilities
The bernette 42 FUNLOCK uses up to four threads and three needles. As a 3-needle coverstitch machine, it creates the parallel topstitch lines commonly seen on T-shirts, activewear, and knitwear.
The narrow and wide coverstitches let you match the stitch spacing to your project. A narrow stitch works well near small garment edges, while the wider stitch gives you a more visible finish.
This machine does not replace a serger for cutting fabric edges or making rolled hems. It focuses on coverstitch work, where you want an elastic hem or a clean line of stitching.
bernette 42 FUNLOCK sews stretchy coverstitch hems and edges on garments. It handles cuffs, necklines, and folded edges, creating durable parallel topstitch rows that move with fabric.
The chain stitch gives you another useful option. You can use it for joining fabric sections, reinforcing seams, or adding a simple decorative line. It forms a straight stitch on top and a chain-like thread pattern underneath.
Differential feed helps you control difficult fabrics. You can reduce waviness in lightweight knits or help prevent layers from shifting as you sew.
The bernette 42 FUNLOCK provides 87 mm of space to the right of the needle. This area gives you room to guide garment sections, especially when sewing hems around sleeves, waistbands, or wider knit panels.
A built-in LED light shines on the needle and fabric area. You can see the fold line and stitch placement more clearly without relying only on room lighting.
The machine can sew at up to 1,300 stitches per minute. You control the working speed with the foot control, so you can sew slowly around curves and speed up on long, straight hems.
Color-coded thread guides help you follow the correct threading route. The machine also has a manual needle threader and a looper threading aid. These features make setup easier when changing thread colours or starting a new project.
Choosing It for Your Sewing Projects
You can use the bernette 42 FUNLOCK on knit fabrics that need to stretch without breaking the thread. Good choices include jersey, rib knit, interlock, French terry, sweatshirt fleece, and athletic knits.
It’s ideal for garments that need a neat, professional, ready-to-wear hem finish. This includes T-shirts, tank tops, leggings, yoga wear, sweatshirts, hoodies, knit dresses, skirts, pyjamas, and children’s knit clothing.
The machine makes narrow and wide coverstitches, at 2.8 mm and 5.6 mm, plus a chain stitch. Use a coverstitch for hems on sleeves, shirt bottoms, and neck edges. The stitching shows as parallel lines on the outside and a flexible looped finish underneath.
You can also use the chain stitch for decorative seams, attaching elastic, or sewing long seams in stable woven fabric. Test your fabric, thread, needle, and tension settings on scraps before sewing the garment.
