Freehand Machine Embroidery Robin Decoration with Sarah at Barnyarns Sew Centre
Location: 24 Barker Business Park, Melmerby, HG4 5NB
Date: November 26th 2025
Time: 1pm - 16.00pm
Hosted by Sussex based textile artist Sarah Becvar, you’ll create create
a sweet robin perched on a sprig of fir using freehand machine
embroidery and framed within a wooden hoop. You’ll use a variety of
thread and techniques to create your stitched robin including sewing
with a Gütermann Sulky variegated thread creating a lovely tone to your
embroidery. Your finished robin can be hung as a decoration in it's
hoop or you may prefer to attach your embroidery to a card blank to make
a personal card, frame your piece or create an embroidered patch on a
cushion, it’s entirely up to you.
With 34 years experience of practising the technique Sarah is delighted
to share her experience throughout this workshop starting with an
informative demonstration and passing on many tips in order to make your
journey into freehand machine embroidery as smooth and enjoyable as
possible. After the demonstration Sarah will assist with the setting up
of your machine and provide you with time to practise the technique on
calico before starting your project. Sarah will offer plenty of guidance
throughout the workshop so that you leave with the confidence to
continue and explore the technique further at home.
Please bring your machine along with an embroidery foot and, in order to
save time, wind your bobbin with a dark brown thread. In order to sew
freehand the feed dog must be lowered on your machine, please contact
Sew Centre if you have any concerns or wish to borrow one of their
machines. Thread and all materials will be provided.
Whether you’re totally new to sewing or have tried the technique before,
this workshop is suitable for all skill levels.
Our showroom is just minutes from the A1 at Melmerby. We have free on-site parking, full disabled access, and will be offering complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the day.
